✨ Daily Hukamnama Reflection – SGGS Ang 749

Jis ke sir ūpar ṯūʼn suāmī so ḏukẖ kaisā pāvai.

🌿 English Meaning

When You stand over us, O Lord and Master, how can we truly be overcome by suffering? Yet the mortal being, intoxicated by Maya, does not know how to remember Your Name, and the reality of death does not enter the mind.

✨ Reflection

Today's Hukamnama places before us two powerful spiritual truths: the protection and support of Waheguru, and the temporary nature of worldly life.

Guru Sahib begins with a line filled with reassurance:

When Waheguru is our Master and support, what power can suffering ultimately have over us?

This does not necessarily mean that a person connected with Waheguru will never experience illness, loss, disappointment or difficulty. Gurbani does not promise a life without challenges.

Instead, it changes how we experience those challenges.

When the mind remains connected with Waheguru, difficulties no longer have to destroy our inner stability. Naam gives us something deeper to hold onto when circumstances are beyond our control.

Guru Sahib then immediately gives us a warning:

“ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦਿ ਮਾਤਾ” — intoxicated by Maya.

Maya can absorb our attention so completely that we begin living as though worldly success is everything.

Money, possessions, status and achievements are not automatically wrong. The danger begins when they occupy the heart so completely that we forget the One who gave us this life.

The line “ਮਰਣਾ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ” reminds us of something we often avoid considering: our time here is limited.

Gurbani's remembrance of death is not intended to make us fearful or pessimistic. It is meant to wake us up.

If life is temporary, then today matters.

There is less reason to carry unnecessary resentment. Less reason to postpone Naam. Less reason to spend our whole life accumulating things we cannot keep.

And there is more reason to love, forgive, serve, remember Waheguru and appreciate the blessings already around us.

The Hukamnama therefore gives us both comfort and direction:

Have faith because Waheguru is your support.

Remain awake because this human life is precious.

🙏 Message for Today

When difficulty comes, remind yourself:

I am not facing this journey without Waheguru.

And when Maya pulls your attention completely into worldly concerns, remember that this life is temporary and precious.

Give some of today to Naam, Gurbani, gratitude and Seva.

May Guru Sahib bless us with unwavering faith in Waheguru, freedom from excessive attachment to Maya and the wisdom to use this precious human life well. 🙏
