How to Measure Your Kara Size Correctly (Inner Diameter Explained)
Welcome to the official Sikh Kara Measuring Guide by OnlineSikhStore Ltd – Trusted Sikh Store UK since 2005.
We have been supplying Sarbloh Karas and Sikh bracelets since 2006, and one of the most common questions we receive is:
“What Kara size do I need?”
This guide explains everything clearly and accurately.
📏 What Does Kara Size Mean?
Kara size is measured by its inner diameter (in centimetres).
It is NOT based on wrist size.
The Kara must pass comfortably over your knuckles, not just fit around your wrist.
✅ Method 1: Measure Your Knuckles (Most Accurate Method)
This is the most reliable way to measure your correct Kara size.
Step 1
Place your fist flat on a firm surface.
Step 2
Using a ruler or measuring tape, measure from:
👉 The centre of your first knuckle
👉 To the centre of your fourth knuckle
This measurement equals your Kara inner diameter size.
Example:
If your measurement reads 7.0 cm, you need a 7.0 cm Kara (inner diameter).
📐 Method 2: Measure an Existing Kara
If you already own a Kara that fits comfortably:
- Place it flat on a surface.
- Measure straight across the inside only.
- Do NOT measure the outer edge.
⚠️ The Kara shown in the image is for illustration purposes only.
📊 Understanding Small Size Differences (Very Important)
A variation of approximately ±2 mm makes a negligible difference in sizing.
For example:
Washing your hands in hot or cold water for a couple of minutes can naturally change hand size by around 2 mm.
This is completely normal.
So please do not worry if your measurement is slightly above or below a round number — a small difference will not significantly affect fit.
📌 Real Experience-Based Size Guidance (Since 2005)
From our experience supplying Karas since 2006:
- Approximately 95% of men wear a 7 cm (Large) Kara
- The average men’s size is around 7 cm
- The average women’s size is around 6 cm
- An 8 cm Kara usually fits a larger build (around 120 kg body weight)
⚠️ These weight references are general guidance only.
The most accurate method is always measuring your knuckles.
🚫 Common Kara Size Myths
It is a common misconception that:
- Most people need XL or XXL sizes
- Very large sizes like 10 cm are standard
This is rarely true.
We occasionally receive requests for sizes such as 10 cm or even 23 cm.
A 23 cm size refers to a Chakar worn on a Dumala (turban) — not a wrist Kara.
Standard wrist Karas do not come in such extreme sizes.
