🌿 English Meaning
In times of happiness and prosperity, many people come and sit with us, surrounding us on every side. But when hardship arrives, worldly companionship may disappear, and those who once surrounded us may no longer remain near.
✨ Reflection
Today's Hukamnama speaks with striking honesty about worldly relationships and where we place our deepest trust.
Guru Sahib observes something that human beings have experienced across generations: when life is going well, companionship can be plentiful.
Success, prosperity and comfortable circumstances often bring people around us. We may feel surrounded by friends, acquaintances and supporters.
Then circumstances change.
Difficulty arrives. Wealth may disappear. Health, status or success may change. A person who once seemed surrounded by others can suddenly discover how temporary some relationships were.
Gurbani is not telling us that every friendship is false or that we should become suspicious of people. Genuine love, family, friendship and Sangat are precious blessings.
Rather, Guru Sahib teaches us not to confuse human companionship with an eternal source of support.
Every human being has limitations. Even people who sincerely love us cannot always remove our pain, solve every problem or remain physically beside us throughout every stage of life.
Our deepest spiritual dependence therefore belongs with Waheguru.
There is also another lesson hidden within these lines.
Instead of only asking, “Who will remain with me during difficult times?”, Gurbani can inspire us to ask:
“Will I remain beside someone else when their difficult time comes?”
It is easy to celebrate with someone during success. True compassion is often revealed when there is nothing to gain — when another person is struggling, grieving, lonely or facing hardship.
Today's Hukamnama can therefore transform both our expectations of others and our own behaviour towards them.
Value sincere relationships. Be grateful for genuine Sangat. Do not become bitter when some people leave.
And try to become the person who does not disappear when someone else needs support.
Above all, anchor the heart in Waheguru rather than in changing circumstances or worldly approval.
🙏 Message for Today
Think of the people who remained sincere with you when life was difficult. Value them.
Then think of someone who may currently be passing through their own difficult time. A message, phone call, kind word or simply being present may mean more than you realise.
And when you yourself feel alone, remember that worldly company may change, but your relationship with Waheguru does not have to.
May Guru Sahib bless us with sincere Sangat, the wisdom to recognise genuine relationships, compassion to stand beside others in hardship and unwavering trust in Waheguru. 🙏
